Award-Winning Presentation at World Peatlands Day 2025

In celebration of World Peatlands Day 2025, an award-winning presentation highlights the growing role of innovative, collaborative approaches in addressing complex environmental challenges. Recognizing that sustainable peatland management requires the involvement of diverse stakeholders, this initiative integrates Living Lab methodologies with educational serious games to foster awareness, learning, and action.

At the center of this initiative is Peatland.asia, an interactive digital platform designed to support peatland education and sustainable conservation. By combining science, participatory learning, and game-based design, the platform translates complex ecological processes into engaging experiences that are accessible to students, practitioners, policymakers, and the wider public.

On 2 June 2025, an award will be presented to Faisal Risq Efendy in recognition of his research on the use of serious games for peatland conservation, conducted as part of his Master’s study at the University of Twente. His work demonstrates how digital tools can enhance environmental literacy, encourage systems thinking, and support behavior change in sustainability contexts.

The event will also feature contributions from leading experts in environmental science and sustainability. Prof. Dr. Tri Retnaningsih Soeprobowati (Universitas Diponegoro) and Dr. Loes Witteveen (CoPSEL) will share perspectives on transdisciplinary learning and community engagement, while the award will be formally presented by Dr. Peter van der Maas (SWS, Van Hall Larenstein University of Applied Sciences).

This World Peatlands Day event underscores the importance of nature-based solutions, digital innovation, and cross-sector collaboration in securing a more resilient and sustainable future.
